Inspiration
According to the UN's 17 SDGs, on average, each person wastes 120kg of food per year. As college students observe daily food waste from the cafeteria, we want to create a convenient project to ensure sustainable consumption and production. Fertify aims to raise individuals’ awareness about waste separation and encourage them to achieve the goal of zero waste by creating circular food systems.
What it does
The app will detect the waste, make separations, predict the amount of generated fertilizer, notify about the compositing progress, and update the individuals’ contributions.
How we built it
By drawing a network of handling organic waste, we figured an app would be useful to track the process and engage various users. A UX/UI application model is then built on Figma. After that, we used opencv and pandas libraries in Python to build a camera AI that detects organic waste. We also used OpenAI to make a quote generation function, encouraging people to lead a sustainable life. On the other hand, we create a smart bin to detect organic waste, aiding the waste filtration. The smart bin and the app assist each other in making the process more fluid and pleasant.
Challenges we ran into
The detecting camera has been confusing between humans and objects. We also face practical challenges such as which farms need recycled organic fertilizers, which organic recycling centers are near DKU, or how to maintain user motivation sustainably.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The app has successfully finished its interface and a demo video. We also finished coding the AI-generated code for the “Quote of the Day”, one of our apps' three most important AI functions.
What we learned
Self-studied how to use Figma, GitHub, teamwork, problem-solving ability, literature review, and community research.
What's next for Fertify
We will re-train AI with the database to enhance the trashcans and in-app cameras. To operate the app in the Kunshan region, we will do a survey interview with the local farmers, contact the surrounding factories, and ask for funding for further opportunities.
