Our two challenges are: the dissemination and scaling of the Dove Self Esteem project and a lack of real role models in young people’s lives. To solve this, we came up with a systemic solution that consists of 2 parts: Higher Education student mentor groups that provide workshops to local secondary schools and a mobile and web app.
The mentor groups will be trained by experts through the app to provide self-esteem projects at local schools, which can be part of their placement or extracurricular. This will allow greater scalability than the current system which requires experts to visit schools themselves. The app is used to deliver training to mentors, to distribute the Dove API content to mentors, students, and parents, and to enable a forum for students to anonymously ask mentors questions. As a security measure, if students post content that is tagged as ‘at risk’, their parents will be alerted (i.e. serious mental health issues), otherwise parents will see the questions asked as anonymous, so students don’t feel discouraged to ask certain things that they don’t want their parents to see.
For the first phase of implementation we are hoping to run a pilot programme at Imperial College London at the fall of 2018. From that, we will develop a digital handbook which will serve as an implementation manual for other universities and will assist in the scaling of the project to any place where the dove API is available internationally.
