Inspiration

Being a woman or other gender minority in a male-dominated industry means that you will experience sexism throughout your career. Women and other gender minorities are often told they are not smart enough and undervalued by co-workers. It is a fact that women make less money than men at the same jobs and women take up a very small percentage of CEO positions.

The hardships that women in male-dominated industries have to endure can often cause feelings of self-doubt, low-confidence, and imposter syndrome.

We wanted to come up with a solution to help women fight imposter syndrome through empowerment. If women and other gender minorities actively acknowledge their own achievements and accomplishments they are one step closer to overcoming imposter syndrome.

What it does

EmpowerMe is a site to Help women and other gender minorities fight imposter syndrome. On our Blog Page, users can read empowering stories about women in STEM and view empowering content including tv shows and films. Additionally, users can track every moment they feel empowered on our Empower Page. Users' entries are stored in a database which they can go back and read anytime they are in need of empowerment.

How we built it

The initial design of the website layout was made on Figma. Unique graphics were created on Photoshop and Adobe-Illustrator.

The frontend including references to pages and interactive features were built through React.js.

For the backend, we used Firebase to store user login information along with users’ text entries.

The backend was written in JavaScript and interpreted by the website using Node.js.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge we faced was combining the backend and frontend together. On our team we had two frontend developers and two backend developers. It took some time to figure out how to integrate the code but overcoming this barrier taught everyone a lot about full-stack development.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Prior to this hackathon, no one on our team had known anyone else. We were all just four strangers hoping to create a beautiful project. As a team, we are proud that we managed to come together within 24 hours and create a meaningful and important website.

What's next for EmpowerMe

Next for EmpowerMe, we hope to create a page where users can view other users' empowering moments. By making EmpowerMe more interactive and collaborative we will not only provide a better user experience but connect more women and other gender minorities.

Additionally, we hope to partner with organizations that support women and other gender minorities in STEM. These organizations include: UN Women, Women for Women International, Equality Now, Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology, and many more. By partnering with other organizations we can grow our network and connect more users.
