Inspiration: The idea for the AI-Powered Citizen Complaint Assistant was inspired by the everyday challenges citizens face while reporting public issues. Problems like damaged roads, garbage overflow, water leakage, drainage issues, and broken street lights are common, but existing complaint systems are often slow, difficult to use, and lack proper tracking.

Citizens usually struggle to identify the correct department, explain the issue clearly, and know the progress of their complaints. At the same time, municipal authorities face challenges in managing large numbers of complaints and prioritizing urgent issues.

We wanted to create a solution that uses Artificial Intelligence to simplify communication between citizens and authorities by automatically understanding complaints and connecting them with the right departments.

What We Learned: While developing this project, we gained knowledge in several areas of modern software development, including:

MERN Stack Development for building a scalable full-stack web application. Backend API development using Node.js and Express.js. Database management using MongoDB for storing users, complaints, and department information. AI integration for image analysis, complaint classification, and voice processing. Location-based services for capturing and processing real-time issue locations. Real-time communication for tracking complaint updates and notifications.

Through this project, we learned how technology can be applied to solve real-world social problems and improve public services.

How We Built the Project: We developed the platform using the MERN Stack: Firebase- Express.js – Handles backend APIs and server communication. React.js – Provides an interactive user interface. Node.js – Runs the backend services.

The system allows citizens to: Upload an image of the issue. Record a voice description. Share their exact location. Submit the complaint.

The backend processes the information, uses AI to identify the problem category, assigns it to the appropriate department, and allows users to track the complaint status.

Challenges We Faced: During development, we faced several challenges, including: Designing a system that can handle different types of complaints efficiently. Integrating AI models for image recognition and voice processing. Managing image and audio file uploads securely. Building accurate complaint classification and department routing logic. Ensuring smooth communication between frontend and backend. Implementing real-time complaint status updates.

Overcoming these challenges helped us improve our problem-solving skills, understand system architecture better, and develop a practical solution for real-world applications.

Project Vision: The AI-Powered Citizen Complaint Assistant aims to create a smarter and more transparent connection between citizens and municipal authorities. By combining Artificial Intelligence, location technology, and full-stack development, we aim to contribute towards cleaner, safer, and more sustainable smart cities.
