Inspiration
There are many extensions for shoppers, but not many that are targeted towards the people on the other side of the screen. eCommerce developers are constantly busy. Not only do they need to make sure the website stays up, they have to help improve sales through SEO and similar. With so many tasks to do within a limited time, we developed an extension to aid eCommerce developers, eComet.
What it does
eComet is a Chrome browser extension that helps eCommerce developers identify and tackle the lowest hanging fruit, so they can focus their time on revenue-generating activities. Users can use eComet to improve SEO by:
- making sure target keywords are in key places
- heading structures are used appropriately
- checking for optimal image resolution to reduce page loading times
- checking for deprecated tags
- checking for dead links
How we built it
This simple yet powerful Chrome extension was created by first researching and analyzing the eCommerce developer persona to understand the problems they face. Then we brainstormed on all the features that an extension can help alleviate some of their frustrations. With the features in mind, our team worked in tandem designing and developing eComet using Figma and programming languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
Challenges we ran into
One of the most significant hurdles our team faced during the development of eComet was managing the scope of the project with the capabilities of the team all within the 36 hours time constraint. However, we managed to resolve this by prioritizing and setting realistic expectations. For example, our team came up with multiple features, but we chose to focus developing those that were most helpful for eCommerce developers and that were feasible.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team is extremely proud to overcome the obstacles and successfully submit our project for our first ever hackathon. We enjoyed being able to bring our vision to life all within a short period of time, and being to incorporate what we learned in school in a fast-paced, high-stressed environment. We're really glad to have made this decision to join uOttaHack.
What we learned
This has been an exciting and eye opening experience for our whole team. We honed our time management skills and discovered the coding languages that we learned for mobile design can be incorporated into browser extensions as well! Our team also learned about the eCommerce developer persona through discussions with the sponsor, Noibu. It was a persona that we never considered even though we do so much of our shopping online nowadays.
What's next for eComet
The eComet team has several plans for the future of this extension, including improving existing functionality and user accessibility. Currently this extension is optimized for the Chrome browser only. We want to expand this functionality to other browsers. After that we want to build upon our other ideas, adding new features such as checking for colour contrast among others. We will conduct user testing after each to make sure eComet meets the needs of our users.
