Inspiration

After witnessing the high amounts of litter within our neighborhoods and schools, we are motivated to create a compelling incentive model that not only helps the environment but also fosters meaningful relationships between others. As students living in Canada, we have realized that not much emphasis is focused on the "little things" involved in broader problems, such as litter pickup. Through the creation of this app, we hope to help mitigate the amount of litter one trash at a time.

What are the features?

EcoConnect keeps local communities clean and green. The key features related to this app enable people to both join and activate litter cleanups between neighbors and friends, with just a few taps! As a way to incentivize people, the app has an "interactive growth tracker" that grows a tree sapling based on the contributions of the user. Lastly, there is an interactive map, sustainable tips, resources, group challenges, volunteer recognition, as well as a user-friendly interface.

What did you use to build it?

We employed Flutter to develop a polished user interface, which empowered us to implement interactive features like an interactive map and detailed profile screens for individual users. Leveraging Flutter's robust framework facilitated agile development and extensive customization, ensuring a fluid user experience characterized by seamless navigation and visually compelling elements.

What Challenges did you face?

Developing EcoConnect posed challenges in integrating key features like the "interactive growth tracker" for tracking user contributions with a dynamic tree sapling. Ensuring a seamless user experience across functions such as joining cleanups and real-time updates on the interactive map were technical hurdles. Incorporating sustainable tips, resources, and volunteer recognition while maintaining a user-friendly interface required careful design and integration efforts.

What are you proud of?

We are very proud of the fact that we were able to develop an app with multiple interfaces. As students who have only participated in very few hackathons, we can comfortably say that this hackathon was a huge stride in enabling us to develop highly complex and large-scale projects.

What did you learn?

We learned how to use a language with very minimal knowledge in it, Flutter. Aswell, we learned how to allocate tasks among various members of the team. Overall, this experience was great and we would for sure participate in it again!

What's next for EcoConnect

Looking ahead, our focus for EcoConnect involves refining these features based on user feedback to enhance engagement and usability. We aim to expand community involvement through strategic partnerships and the introduction of new technologies that support our mission of promoting environmental awareness. By continuously improving the platform's functionality and user experience, we are committed to fostering a more sustainable future through active participation and education.
