Sustainable Development Goal #7, affordable and clean energy.
As the global energy demand continues to rise, it's crucial that we shift our focus towards cleaner, renewable energy alternatives to mitigate the impact on our planet.
Several members of the group have been exploring the logistics of implementing solar panels and have encountered challenges with the necessary calculations. Thus, we have crafted EEA to streamline the process and make researching solar energy less intimidating.
What it does
EEA prompts users to enter their previous annual electricity cost, province, and useable roof surface area (if known). From there, EEA provides the number of panels needed, the required surface area for the panels, the cost and the payback period for the price. If users decide to enter the roof surface area, EEA will check if their surface area meets the required space to host all necessary panels. If not, EEA provides a percentage of usable panels, the number of panels, and an updated pay period/total installation cost for the updated panel amount.
How we built it
EEA was built in VSCode collaboratively (with additional help from Chat GPT) using HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
Challenges we ran into
As a beginner team with various beginner levels, we struggled with git and some calculation errors, especially since our team had no prior knowledge of solar panel setup.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team is happy to have a finished product that exceeds our initial expectations. During our brainstorming process, we considered making a prototype on Figma. We are delighted to have a coded final project.
What we learned
Our team had little HTML and JavaScript experience, we learned a lot through our self exploration and the workshops provided. Our main learning takeaway is our new understanding of git (how it works/how to work collaboratively on projects).
What's next for Eco Energy Assessor - Solar Calculator
The next step would be to expand our provinces/territories in Canada-wide. To refine our data and have more precise calculations based on regions.
