Inspiration

Meal kits are gaining popularity, but the paper recipe cards they come with are flat and can be a bit challenging to follow for people who are new to cooking. (Especially since these people make up a big part of their audience!) Our 3D version has animated step-by-steps to make it super simple for even complete newbies.

What it does

Using Snapchat to scan to the recipe card, the Marker feature automatically launches an AR version of the cooking instructions. 3D animations visualize each step, accompanied by the text instructions for reference. Using hand tracking, the person cooking can just gesture to get from one step to the next, without having to wash their hands constantly as they cook.

How we built it

We brainstormed as a team about real-life ways Snapchat AR lenses could benefit our lives, and came up with this very real use case that lots of people can relate to. Once we landed on this key insight, we looked at assembling the 3D assets, animating them, and then coding them into Lens Studio. We also created our own mocked up meal kit brand (Easy Meals) and designed a recipe card to envision how it would look with our cook-along AR filter in real life. We printed out the card, developed the filter storyboard according to the cooking instructions, then assembled and animated the 3D assets accordingly before finally coding them in Lens Studio.

Challenges we ran into

We wanted to make it as easy as possible to open the lens, so we had to explore how to incorporate Marker tech. We also wanted to facilitate the process of moving between steps, so added the hand gesture tracking to trigger this. (Quite futuristic/sci-fi feeling!) With the 3D animated assets and coding in these different features, it was challenging to ensure we were still within file size parameters.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of building a tool that's not just fun to use, but also has real world applications and could very well be used to making cooking easier for tons and tons of people. The team collaborated really well in bringing the ideas together and to life.

What we learned

We tested ways to tap into different Snap AR features into one lens to make them work together seamlessly into a very useful end product.

What's next for Easy Meals

We'd love to package this up as a product offering to pitch to our existing clients. Following that, we would love to pitch to prospective new clients as well, in an effort to monetize what we've created.
