Inspiration
Our inspiration comes from the tragic incidents cased by crowd jams in several Hajj seasons before, in addition to a real experience of two of the team members who already performed Hajj and faced the pilgrims dispatching difficulties that are the main cause of injuries and casualties during Hajj. Moreover, we are inspired by the Saudi Arabia Vision 2030 that aims to increase the number of pilgrims in the coming years.
What it does
QARIB application automatically advises Hajj Campaigns (not individuals) to get dispatched to their destinations in specific routes and scheduled time and order while monitoring their movement to assure their compliance with the schedule.
How we built it
To build QARIB we have used the following techniques:
- Real-time location tracking using GPS.
- Google Map Direction datasets that include ( routes, duration, types of transportation).
- Automated Algorithm to build dispatching schedule for each pilgrims' campaign in every stage.
- Push real-time data and notifications to mobile app that guide the group leaders (mufawejeen) on the routes of their required dispatching destination.
- Monitor and track the compliance of each pilgrims' campaign via admin panel with non-compliance alerts.
Challenges we ran into
- Finding the optimum dispatching routes from/to each destination of each Hajj stage
- Getting real-time measurements of the traffic jam and crowded areas and reroute based on these information
- Measuring the compliance of each pilgrims campaign "Hamla" with the proposed dispatch schedule
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Our system impact to increase number of pilgrims when applied while reducing Hajj incidents
- Simplicity and creativity of our solution that offers crowd management with minimal man intervention
- Increasing the pilgrims dispatching efficiency
- Using Big Data for dispatching schedules
What we learned
- Teamwork
- Efficient time management
- Google cloud & BigQuery
What's next for E-001-QARIB
Defining all the routes that pilgrims follow in Arafat, Muzdalifa, Mena, and Jamarat in addition to scheduling the timing for campaigns to head to Tawaf in the Holy Mosque. We believe that although QARIB is a simple solution that can fully operate using GPS only, however, the impact is huge by lowering the level of incidents, and giving the authorities the ability to host an increasing number of pilgrims.
