Inspiration
For the safety of youngsters learning to drive, the anxiety of letting them go on the road alone is overwhelming. Drive Guard was born out of a need for peace of mind, ensuring that young drivers stay safe and responsible
What it does
Drive Guard monitors a driver's speed in real-time, allowing parents to set a maximum speed limit and a buffer over posted speed limits. If the driver exceeds these limits, the app sends an instant text alert to the parent, ensuring they are always in the loop.
How we built it
We developed Drive Guard using Android Studio, leveraging GPS data to access local speed limits and track the driver's current speed. We integrated Android's API to enable seamless text message alerts. The app combines user-friendly design with robust functionality to provide a reliable safety tool.
Challenges we ran into
One of the major hurdles was parsing XML data from a URL to accurately fetch local speed limits. Additionally, sending text messages from within the app posed its own set of technical challenges. Despite these obstacles, we persevered and found effective solutions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're incredibly proud of making Drive Guard fully functional. From accurate speed tracking to instant alerts, every feature works seamlessly. Achieving this level of reliability and user-friendliness is a significant accomplishment.
What we learned
Throughout this project, we learned the intricacies of GPS data handling and the complexities of XML parsing. We also gained valuable experience in integrating communication APIs and ensuring smooth app performance.
What's next for Drive Guard
The next step for Drive Guard is to integrate a database for storing login information, making it even more secure and personalized. We also plan to enhance the app with more advanced safety features, ensuring it remains the ultimate tool for monitoring young drivers.
Drive Guard is more than just an app; it's a commitment to safety and peace of mind for both parents and young drivers.
