Inspiration
We are passionate about promoting sustainability and reducing waste in our communities. We noticed that many college students have a lot of unwanted items at the end of each quarter/semester, and these items often end up being thrown away or left behind in dorm rooms.
We wanted to create a platform that would allow college students to easily donate or sell their unwanted items to other students who may need them. By doing so, we hope to ==promote a culture of thrifting and reuse among college students==, while also reducing the amount of waste generated on college campuses.
Additionally, we understand the financial strain that many college students face, and we believe that by providing a platform for students to buy and sell used items, we can help alleviate some of this burden.
What it does
Our app is designed to be a platform for college students to buy, sell, or donate items to other students across their dorms. Students can post listings for items they no longer need or want, such as furniture, clothing, textbooks, electronics, and more. Essentially, it works like an online marketplace for secondhand goods.
How we built it
When it came to designing our app, we used a design tool called Figma. This allowed us to create a detailed prototype, ranging all the way from the start page to the view-posting section.
For each page, we carefully considered the user experience and how we could make the app as intuitive and user-friendly as possible. We paid close attention to the visual design, choosing colors, fonts, and images that would create a cohesive and visually appealing interface.
Challenges we faced
As college students and first-time hackathon participants, we faced a number of challenges throughout the design and prototyping process. One of the biggest challenges was managing our time effectively, especially as we were also juggling final exams and other projects.
We had to balance our academic responsibilities with the demands of the hackathon, which required a significant amount of time and effort to complete. This made it difficult to find enough time to work on the app design and prototype.
Despite these challenges, we were determined to see the project through and develop a high-quality prototype.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
As a team, we are truly proud of the college thrift app that we have designed. We believe that this application has the potential to make a real difference in our college community by promoting sustainability and thriftiness.
Moreover, we are proud of the fact that we have been able to create an application that we can genuinely be proud of. As college students ourselves, we understand the needs and challenges of our peers, and we have designed this app with their interests and preferences in mind.
We are excited to see where this project takes us in the future, and we feel privileged to have had the opportunity to participate in this hackathon challenge!
What we learned
Given that we were college students with busy schedules and competing demands, we quickly realized how important it is to manage our time effectively. We had to learn how to balance our academic responsibilities with the demands of the hackathon, and prioritize tasks based on their importance and urgency.
What's next for DormExpress
The next step is to move into the development phase -- coding the app's interface and the backend infrastructure.
