Inspiration
I was inspired to create this game several years ago when I was taking my first ever game development class, and was tasked with coming up with several concepts for a 2D game. While I was on break, I went on a family trip to Disney World, where I saw real-life gibbons playing across the faux jungle in Animal Kingdom. It was there that I decided on Land of the Gibbons as one of multiple game concepts: to give the player the chance to become a carefree monkey (or gibbon) running through the jungle.
What it does
Land of the Gibbons is a 2D side scrolling platform game. The player uses arrow keys and the spacebar to make their way through a jungle full of booby traps on their way to the ruins. Along the way, they'll have the chance to pick up coins and collectables, while avoiding enemies and hazards.
How we built it
I originally created this game in Unity, and for this hackathon, I built upon it further with my expanded knowledge of C# and Unity's capabilities.
Challenges we ran into
My original concept for the game was to have the player character swing from vines as they made their way across the jungle. I tried to implement several versions of a "grappling hook" type mechanic, but ultimately did not believe that they had the natural feel I was going for, leading me to have the character walk instead.
What we learned
One of my big additions to the project this weekend, was AI additions to the enemies. While I was unable to completely finish this in the time period as I was working on several projects, I was able to build the basis for some basic intelligence, including tracking/following the player character, and changing speed based on the distance from the player.
What's next for Land of the Gibbons
I'm hoping to create a few more levels of this nifty little game, and continue to build on the first video game I created.
