Inspiration To begin the design process for this project, we started by referencing work which already exists. We first looked at the paper which first addressed the idea of a "Sky Hook" in 1966. We then referenced work from artists like Lebbus Woods, whos work revolves around the representation of strange technologies. We also referenced existing technologies such as the Lockheed Martin F-117A Nighthawk. With these precedents in mind, we were able to start developing the project.
Development Each team member directly contributed to the model of the structure, adding a bit of their own unique elements of design. Then, each team member focused on developing a visual language based on their own unique skill set and personal focuses. Katie focused on materiality and graphic representation, Murtuza focused on form and diagrammatic representation, while Eric focused on movement and animation. All of these different elements were synthesised into one cohesive project
Thoughts Ultimately, we all believe our project is about public interface. It is difficult to get interest, funding, or even knowledge about a project when it is represented nowhere but in papers. We believe that behind every great engineer is a great designer, and that as designers, it is our role to promote projects which we believe will contribute making the world a better place. With the "billionaire space race" in full swing, we believe creating competition in the space market by making space travel is vital.
We hope you enjoy our "Skyhack 3.0" project
