Describe your project (max 150 words) Flex is a digital time management system functioning as a personalized hub for students. Flex gives users the ability to fully customize a planner that perfectly suits their unique organizational needs, fostering a sense of ownership and flexibility in their daily planning.
Describe your research process and findings. If you conducted any surveys or interviews, please include the survey form and/or interview questions here. If you conducted secondary research by pulling from online sources, please include a link to your sources. (Max 500 words) After initially exploring six different product ideas, I settled on the concept of a time management platform. In my personal experience and the experience of my peers, I am often unsatisfied with the digital planning tools available. These tools are either too complex or not flexible enough to suit my specific needs. I identified the overarching problem statement: "College students struggle with time management" and started writing interview questions. Seeking insights from the target audience, I distributed a Google Forms survey, asking broad questions about students experiences with time management. Additionally, I conducted a competitive analysis on existing time management apps, uncovering several pain points. My survey responses validated this, with many respondents expressing how tools like Notion have too high of a learning curve. After analyzing the responses from 15 survey participants, I distilled the research findings into bullet points, highlighting common themes and pain points. I then started thinking of specific features that would benefit the user and began designing low-fidelity wireframes. Given the tight time constraints, I iterated as I sketched and designed, asking friends and coworkers their thoughts along the way. With a clear direction in mind, I transitioned to developing high-fidelity wireframes, ultimately arriving at this initial solution to the problem. Describe your most important design decisions. What research findings and/or user testing results led you to make these decisions? (Max 500 words) In response to user feedback indicating that existing time management platforms, such as Notion, were perceived as having a steep learning curve and being overwhelming, a crucial design decision was made to prioritize simplicity and user-friendliness. The insights from user interviews highlighted a strong preference for an intuitive system. Consequently, I opted for a straightforward drag-and-drop design system for the digital planner. This decision aimed to address the pain points expressed by users, providing them with a highly customizable experience without the complexities associated with traditional platforms. I also chose to add a template feature so if the user just simply wants to customize a premade template they can do so. The emphasis on a user-friendly interface was rooted in the understanding that a simpler, more intuitive design would contribute significantly to a positive user experience, aligning with the goal of making time management accessible and efficient in order for it to serve it's purpose: to support students.
