Inspiration
We've come to realize that most of our friends and people we know doesn't know where or what our culture is. This is where the creation of CulMap comes from. To give others a breif explaination of where a culture comes from.
What it does
What CulMap does is it presents an interactive map of the world where the user can click on each continent, which will then allow the user to choose countries. Whenever a country is chosen it will provide a brief description of the country and it's culture. This allows the user to acknowledge more about culture in a region and country and the location of these regions and countries.
How we built it
We made the website utilizing html and css in the beginning and when the coding was getting more advanced with javascript and d3.js we had to consult OpenAi for assistance. Afterwards we did our research with OpenAi and google in order to change parts of the code we recieved and make it more like what we intended for our design.
Challenges we ran into
A challenge we ran into was understanding a lot of the code syntax as all of us are generally beginners to these kinds of code, having taken computer science classes at school we haven't dabbled in anything extra with this being the first. We are more unexperienced so figuring out bits and parts of html and css helped us change text, but then for the map and pictures we ran into a problem regarding svg where it didn't work as intended especially with it's shape. When using OpenAi we first got weird shapes when creating groups in the svg. Then there were also a few problems with interactions when hovering and clicking on each individual country, which we solved.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we were able to complete in time while also getting sleep. The map itself being interactive and fairly pleasing to the eye is probably what we are most proud of.
What we learned
We learned a lot about html and css. This also let us learn a bit of javascript based off of our previous experience on Java. This along with how to draw using canvas and path and what svgs are. Partially what d3 was, but that was the hardest and most confusing thing we worked with.
What's next for CulMap
CulMap, if possible would be further improved with the use of greater AI responses over Wikipedia as Wikipedia can be edited by anyone and AI responses would make it give greater more concise information.
