Inspiration
Living in Sri Lanka, especially when traveling to Colombo, traffic became more than just an inconvenience, it became lost time, stress, wasted fuel, and exhaustion.
As students and daily commuters, we personally experienced how difficult urban transportation can be. Long hours on the road, limited parking availability, and inefficient coordination between transport services inspired me to create a smarter solution.
That idea became CommuteLink a platform designed to simplify commuting through connected mobility services.
What it does
CommuteLink is an integrated urban mobility platform that allows users to:
- π Book parking spaces in real time
- π Reserve transport rides and seats
- πΊοΈ View routes through interactive maps
- π Receive real-time notifications
- π± Verify bookings through QR codes
- π Manage commute history and active trips
The platform connects commuters, drivers, and parking operators into one ecosystem to reduce traffic stress and improve daily travel efficiency.
How we built it
We built CommuteLink using modern full-stack technologies focused on scalability and real-time interaction.
Frontend
- React + TypeScript
- Tailwind CSS
- shadcn/ui
- React Router
- Leaflet Maps
Backend
- Supabase
- PostgreSQL
- Supabase Authentication
- Supabase Realtime
Features Implemented
- Parking reservation system
- Transport booking system
- QR-based verification
- Role-based dashboards
- Interactive maps
- Real-time notifications
- Responsive glassmorphic UI
We focused heavily on creating a clean and human-centered user experience instead of a traditional admin-style dashboard.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was integrating multiple mobility services into one seamless workflow.
We had to manage:
- Real-time booking updates
- User authentication and roles
- Route visualization
- Database synchronization
- Responsive UI design
Another challenge was making the interface feel modern, intuitive, and emotionally engaging while still maintaining functionality.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that CommuteLink solves a real-world problem experienced by thousands of commuters every day.
Highlights
- Successfully combined parking and transport into one platform
- Built a modern glassmorphic UI
- Implemented QR-based booking verification
- Created role-based dashboards
- Designed a scalable real-time system
Most importantly, we transformed a personal frustration into a meaningful tech solution.
What we learned
Through this project, we learned:
- The importance of user-centered design
- Real-time application development with Supabase
- Scalable frontend architecture using React
- Designing systems around real human problems
I also learned that good technology should reduce stress, save time, and improve everyday life.
What's next for CommuteLink
vision is to expand CommuteLink into a smarter urban mobility ecosystem.
Future Plans
- AI-powered traffic prediction
- Smart parking recommendations
- Live bus tracking
- Carpool and ride-sharing integration
- Fuel and carbon savings analytics
- Mobile application support
- Smart city integration
We believe smarter commuting can create cleaner cities, reduce wasted time, and improve daily life for commuters across Sri Lanka.
Project Impact
Daily commuting inefficiency can be thought of as:
$$ \text{Stress} + \text{Traffic} + \text{Time Lost} \rightarrow \text{Reduced Productivity} $$
CommuteLink aims to reverse that equation:
$$ \text{Smart Mobility} + \text{Efficient Planning} \rightarrow \text{Better Urban Living} $$
