Inspiration

I've been wanting to create a true coloring book experience since I started designing in Horizon Worlds. I enjoy coloring, and so does my family. I wanted to create an experience that was fun for everyone, and could be played on multiple devices, since not everyone has multiple headsets in their homes.

What it does

When you arrive to Color Book Collections, you are equipped with your very own paint gun. You can start coloring the default scene in the color area, or you can select a new collection to load from the collections board. You can change your paintgun's texture by interacting with the color options menu, over 20 textures to choose from! Points for coloring are added to the leader boards, so the more you color the more you earn!

How we built it

This world was built mainly in blender then imported into Horizon Worlds. I used images I generated with midjourney for the background environment landscape, layered in to create the illusion of depth. The custom User Interfaces were built in Illustrator, then coded in html/css, then finally brought into typescript... all the scripting was coded in VSCode. A lot of referencing the docs, and trying to find examples of what I was trying to do. When stuck the community was very helpful! Mentors were so crucial to being able to troubleshoot issues when I couldn't find examples in the documentation.

Challenges we ran into

Lots of challenges around passing events through the custom user interface, but we were able to use workarounds for getting information out of bindings. Wasn't able to spawn an asset and in typescript change it's motion from none to interactive/animated. I had to rather create an asset from my model import - and animate all items of a collection. The shooting mechanics - were a struggle to get right as well. **** Screen Overlay (non-blocking) stopped working in VR and desktop mid contest. I created a workaround for viewers on desktop, vs mobile, vs. vr.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proud of the concept to completion - honestly the whole process. I learned so much! I have a game that I am excited to show off to my friends, family and anyone who shares a passion for coloring like I do! <3

What we learned

Custom Model Import Workarounds Custom User Interface Strategies and Best Practices Asset Spawning Lots and lots of new typescript!

What's next for Color Book Collections

I plan to update with new collections monthly as well as new textures that can be purchased - I just ran out of time to get that implemented by the deadline! The possibilities for this world and seasonal content are endless, I'm looking forward to building more and expanding this concept into more worlds for Horizon Worlds!!
