Inspiration
A concept that resonated with all four of us, was the decrease in third spaces (places outside of home and work where people unwind and socialize) since the pandemic. As students, we understand the need for connection and how hard it is to find the right atmosphere. We leaned into the concept of Clairsentience to understand the energy's and emotions of the people and places around you.
What it does
Clair builds connection and belonging. It guides you to places that are in tune with your current energy. Clair can read the energy of people using the app as well as reading the energy of locations that have chosen to participate in Clair. Clair essentially is a matchmaker between users and third spaces.
How we built it
We started off with brainstorming. We had a few concepts and we discussed how we would address each part of the prompt, which helped us narrow down which concept worked best for this competition. In the end we chose Clair because it resonated with us and we had a plan to address each part of the prompt. We did research into third spaces, clairsentience, and user personas. Then we created three flow charts, and moved on to wireframing our flows. While some of us wireframed, others created a design and brand direction including colors, typography, logo, and how some of our components would look. Then we used the design direction to start designing the final app pages, and added functionality as we went.
Challenges we ran into
Some of our team members were travelling, so communicating was a challenge at first but we overcame this by scheduling video check-ins twice a day to keep everyone on the same page. Coming up with new technology that doesn't already exist was also difficult, technology is very advanced and it can sometimes be hard to think of new ways to build an app. The messaging and content for this app was difficult. A lot of research had to be done to come up with a word for the sense that we were addressing. Communicating new and novel experiences with the senses.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're pretty proud of the group that we put together. We started recruiting members on Thursday and were turned down a few times. It took some convincing to decide to sacrifice part of our spring break. We are pretty proud that we found a way to create our very abstract idea for a navigation/compass. More of the app was realized than we expected to be able to accomplish in such a short time frame.
What we learned
We learned some improved communication skills. For some of us this was our first UI/UX project that was a group project. We learned a lot about the importance of good copywriting and good presentation skills.
What's next for Clair
Our group is super excited to add Clair to our portfolios. In terms of future projections for Clair, the next feature would be reading a user's energy through a wearable device and then giving them notifications when they are near a place they are in the mood for. This would give users the option to try out a new place they didn't even know they needed. We want Clair to feel spontaneous and novel, and any way we could lean into that is a step in the right direction.
