Inspiration Every day, people encounter civic problems like potholes, broken streetlights, overflowing garbage bins, water leakages, and damaged roads. While these issues affect millions, reporting them is often confusing because citizens don't know which department to contact or how to follow up. Existing systems are fragmented, lack transparency, and rarely encourage community participation.

We wanted to build a platform that empowers citizens to become active contributors to their neighborhoods. Our goal was to simplify civic issue reporting using AI, increase trust through community verification, and provide clear guidance for resolving problems. This idea led to CivicResolve, an AI-powered hyperlocal civic issue reporting platform.

What it does

CivicResolve enables citizens to report local civic issues quickly and efficiently. Users can:

  1. Upload a photo of a civic issue
  2. Select its location on an interactive map
  3. Receive AI-generated issue categorization, priority, and tags
  4. Get a complete AI-powered resolution plan including:
  5. Responsible government department
  6. Official helpline number
  7. Estimated resolution timeline
  8. Step-by-step action guide
  9. Ready-to-send complaint letter
  10. Verify issues reported by nearby community members Track issue status in real time (Open → Verified → In Progress → Resolved) Earn points, badges, and leaderboard rankings through community participation The platform also provides an analytics dashboard showing reporting trends, resolution rates, and civic hotspots.

How we built it

We built CivicResolve using modern web technologies and Google Cloud services.

Frontend

React 18 TypeScript Vite Tailwind CSS React Router React Hook Form Zustand

Maps Leaflet OpenStreetMap

Data Visualization Recharts

Backend & Cloud Firebase Authentication (Google Sign-In) Cloud Firestore (real-time database) Google Cloud Run Docker Nginx

Artificial Intelligence Groq Gemini 1.5 Flash (future use) Issue categorization Priority detection AI-generated resolution plans Complaint letter generation Predictive civic insights (future enhancement)

Challenges we ran into

Building CivicResolve presented several technical and design challenges.

Designing an intuitive reporting workflow that requires minimal user effort. Structuring Firestore data to support real-time updates and community verification. Integrating interactive maps with issue markers and live status updates. Creating a scalable verification system to improve report credibility. Deploying the application using Docker and Google Cloud Run. Designing AI prompts that generate useful and accurate civic guidance. Balancing usability, transparency, and performance throughout the application.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that CivicResolve goes beyond being a simple complaint portal. Some of our biggest achievements include: AI-assisted civic issue reporting Community verification system AI-generated complaint letters Personalized resolution plans Interactive live issue map Real-time issue lifecycle tracking Impact analytics dashboard Gamification with badges and leaderboards Secure Google Authentication Successful deployment on Google Cloud Run Most importantly, we created a platform that encourages citizens to actively participate in improving their communities.

What we learned

Throughout this hackathon, we learned: Building scalable React applications with TypeScript. Integrating Firebase Authentication and Firestore effectively. Deploying containerized applications on Google Cloud Run. Designing AI-powered workflows using Gemini. Working with interactive mapping technologies. Managing real-time application state. Designing user experiences that encourage community engagement. We also learned how AI can simplify complex civic processes and make public services more accessible.

What's next for CivicResolve

We plan to continue improving CivicResolve with several advanced features.

Future enhancements include:

Gemini Vision for automatic image recognition More advanced version of CivicBot AI assistant(Bot is already there now) Direct notifications to municipal authorities Dedicated government authority dashboard Offline-first Progressive Web App (PWA) Hindi and regional language support Voice-based issue reporting WhatsApp and X (Twitter) sharing AI-powered hotspot prediction using historical reports Integration with municipal grievance systems and open government APIs
