Inspiration
The current trend for 'retro-tech' reminded me of a game I used to play with my cd walkman in the back of the car on long car rides. I'd wait for the CD to spin up then pop the lid and try and get it to stop as straight as possible to line up with a mark on the bottom of the device. A simpler time.
What it does
The user taps the player to open it, the spinning CD gradually comes to a stop with a score based on how far apart the arrows are. The goal of this game was to be easy to replay, but annoying in that it's hard to get a high score. Hopefully aiming for that short-loop sweet spot. Adding a leaderboard hopefully means people will challenge their friends.
How we built it
I created the CD Player in Blender and then layered up different graphics and reflections on the CD in Lens Studio to get the look I remembered. I then made a base prototype of the game to make sure I could get the CD to stop at different points depending on when it was tapped and refined from there to turn that angle into a score and make it easily replay-able.
Challenges we ran into
Getting the CD player to move around smoothly and naturally alongside head movement from the user while trying to keep everything on screen was a little challenging.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This is the first time I've incorporated a leaderboard into a lens and will do this a lot more going forward.
What we learned
Leaderboards are pretty straightforward! I'm really hoping adding this component will give it a boost by people challenging their friends. Curious to see how much it's used and how high the top score will get.
What's next for CD Game
Refining the play/replay loop, tidying up a few of the graphics!
