We wanted to build an innovative tool that connected complicated physics and math equations into an easily accessible simulator that also encourages curiosity. As far as our research went, Cascadia is the only user-friendly tsunami simulator on the web. It has very real applications in natural disaster prevention and analysis.
We used 4 data apis from the Homeland Infrastructure Foundation-Level Data and ArcGis datasets to enrich our project with aspects like population data, earthquake impacts, flood plains, cities, etc. We purposely spent a lot of time on researching the physics behind tsunamis and earthquakes. The website calculates run-up time for waves using Green's law, wave speed, impact timing, and Seismic energy.
We hope our love for physics and CS is shown.
