Inspiration

Finding classrooms, labs, offices, and other facilities inside a large college campus can be difficult, especially for new students, visitors, and participants attending events. Traditional maps mainly help users reach the campus but often do not provide a simple way to find a specific room or building inside it.

We were inspired to build CampusNav to make campus navigation easier by providing a digital indoor navigation experience designed specifically for students and visitors.

What it does

CampusNav — Indoor Campus Navigation helps users find locations within the campus and understand how to reach them.

Users can:

Search for classrooms, labs, departments, offices, and campus facilities. View locations on an interactive campus map. Get step-by-step directions to their selected destination. Explore important campus buildings and facilities. Quickly locate unfamiliar rooms and departments. Use a simple, student-friendly interface for faster navigation.

The goal is to reduce the time and confusion involved in finding locations across a large campus.

How we built it

We built CampusNav as a modern web-based navigation application with a responsive interface designed for both desktop and mobile users.

The project combines:

Frontend: React / modern web technologies UI: Responsive, student-friendly interface Map: Campus map and location-based navigation Navigation: Search and route guidance between campus locations Data: Structured campus buildings, rooms, and facilities Deployment: Web-based deployment for easy access

We focused on creating an experience that feels more like a dedicated campus navigation system rather than a traditional static campus map.

Challenges we ran into

Challenges we ran into

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was converting a real campus environment into a navigation-friendly digital representation.

We also had to think about:

Representing buildings and rooms in a structured way. Designing routes that are easy for students to understand. Making the interface simple despite having multiple campus locations. Making the application responsive across different screen sizes. Handling incorrect or unavailable destinations gracefully. Creating a useful navigation experience without making the interface complicated.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of turning the idea of indoor campus navigation into a functional web application focused on a real-world student problem.

Some of our key accomplishments are:

Created a dedicated campus navigation experience. Added searchable campus locations. Designed an interactive and visually engaging campus map. Built a responsive interface for students and visitors. Organized campus locations into a structured navigation system. Focused on simplicity so users can find destinations quickly. Created a foundation that can be expanded with additional campus services.

What we learned

Designing user-friendly navigation flows. Structuring real-world location data. Connecting frontend interfaces with application logic. Thinking about accessibility and responsive design. Handling navigation edge cases. Designing technology around an actual user problem rather than just building features.

Most importantly, we learned how a relatively simple idea can become much more useful when it is designed around the everyday problems faced by students

What's next for CampusNav — Indoor Campus Navigation

What's next for CampusNav

We want to expand CampusNav into a more complete smart campus navigation platform.

Future improvements could include:

📍 Real-time GPS positioning 🧭 More accurate indoor positioning 🚶 Walking route optimization ♿ Accessible routes for users with mobility requirements 🏢 Detailed floor-by-floor navigation 🔎 Faster room and facility search 📱 Progressive Web App / mobile application 🗺️ 3D campus visualization 📢 Event and classroom navigation 🤖 AI-powered campus assistant 🔄 Live campus information and location updates

Our long-term goal is to make CampusNav a digital navigation layer for the entire campus.
