Inspiration
WHY BU-PAI? In the USA you may know them as the mentor and mentee duo. However, in Japan there's senpai and kouhai. And bringing this into Bing, you get BUpai :D From the logo hopefully you see all the letters within. I tried sticking with the standard Binghamton colors.
The chat with the Women in Technology yesterday solidified how mentors play a role in a young professional's life. I believe the best way to solve this problem was to mesh the UI of certain dating apps (primarily Hinge) of answering questions about one self.
What it does
Here's the issue: There's not enough time to search on LinkedIn or find people at club events you couldn't make. There are also only so many career fairs that happen throughout the semester as well as Type B personalities. So this app should match individuals with people of similar characteristics and interests. It can schedule a meeting between mentors and mentees and add them to Google Calendar. When starting an account, one can choose to be a mentor or mentee. After listing some traits, they will be formatted in a different layout and grid for users to view.
How I built it
After doing some user research with Google Surveys to find how people connect on campus, I used InVision which is a great software that runs across desktop, mobile and tablet.
Challenges I ran into
I ran into many instances where I had trouble saving the file as I was downloading a lot of images. It took me a while to figure out how to screen record and just using InVision for the first time after not having touched AdobeXD in a long time was interesting.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Roughly completing the vision I had coming into hackathon, staying overnight and connecting with people today!
What I learned
People at HackBU are awesome and I'm able to pull an all nighter. Also learned how to use InVision after downloading it for the first time yesterday.
What's next for BU-pai
Improve the UI/UX - I expected to complete it with a better than elementary look. I would like to add a feature where mentees and mentors can turn on their location and be open to a talk whenever, wherever, similar to what our RAs do for us. Another thing to factor in is whether or not people want their mentor to be a specific gender. Gender pronouns would be available in the future to be inclusive.
I'd like to set up a system on this app where mentees can set a goal on how many mentors they should connect with in a month and reward them with certain benefits offered by clubs on campus.
One last aspect to work on - successfully incorporating the main Binghamton colors to the app.
