Inspiration
Now more than ever kids are glued to their screens, leading to bad posture, deteriorating attention spans, and cognitive decline. My team and I set out to solve this issue by developing a product that would incentivise children to seek adventure, be productive, and go outside.
What it does
Bonby is an AI-powered task manager and app blocker. It has two modes: Child mode, and parent mode. In parent mode, a guardian can select tasks to allocate to their child with rewards for completion, in addition to this they can pick apps to block after the child has used them for a certain amount of time. Once a child is over the time limit, they must do a task to earn more time. Parent mode is locked with a pin so that the child cannot access it. Once the child returns the device to the parent, the parent can enter the pin and have full permission to change task allocation.
How we built it
All the UI components were built using Figma, additionally, our mascot was designed using Adobe Illustrator.
Challenges we ran into
Planning and working around busy weekend schedules was the biggest issue we ran into. With most of our team having other commitments, we had to work under pressure as time slowly began to tick down.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of how our team came together to split up tasks and the methods we employed to address issues people face with addiction to digital devices. We believe the approach we took to stop the rise of the iPad kid is innovative and if implemented in the real world, could potentially help those suffering from addiction to digital devices.
What we learned
This was our first hackathon ever, and learning the ropes proved to be difficult. Managing time, and resources, and maintaining consistency in our designs were our biggest takeaways from this experience.
What's next for Bonby
Continue to iterate and develop our project further! Perhaps turn it into a viable product. Who knows, Bonby's story is still open-ended.
