Inspiration
This game was heavily inspired by Nintendo's Bomberman franchise. Bomberman was a classic I played growing up, so I wanted to reinvent it into a modern matching game. Candy crush is a mobile game I also played a lot, and I saw parallels between the styles of both games.
How It Works
A grid is loaded with an array of different colored bombs. The player has 30 moves to match as many bombs as they can and get the highest score. Matching 3 bombs grants 30 points, 4 bombs - 50 points, and 5 bombs - 100 points. When the player runs out of moves a game-over message is displayed along with a reset button to play again.
Challenges
For the most part I was able to solve the short issues I had with my code. However, I will say that my code did become very messy and that will impact future changes. Writing concise code is very difficult as a beginner, but I know that if I go back to revise my code I can make it cleaner.
Accomplishments
I am very proud of this project because it is the first game I've developed and the first website I've fully developed. I recently taught myself about Git and GitHub and hosting websites through Vercel, so I would say my biggest accomplishment is this entire project overall; I created my first browser-based game!
Insight
This project taught me a lot about DOM manipulation, which is something I didn't have much experience with. I believe I developed a solid foundation in creating a Javascript application as opposed to a static webpage. I also learned that CSS has properties for blend modes, which saved me time with some of my assets. Instead of opening my design programs I just had to insert a few lines of code.
The Future of Bomberman Reloaded
This is only the beginning for Bomberman Reloaded. My goal is to turn Bomberman Reloaded into a game adjacent to the other titles in the Bomberman franchise. Level designs, environments, and many more mechanics are in the works!
