Inspiration

We wanted to create a comfortable and homey app that helps fellow college students regulate their time management and sleep schedule. Thus, Sonata was born! the cutesy aesthetic was established to help users feel welcomed. Our inspiration was sourced from similar illustration styles. We included elements of gamification in order for the user to have a fun activity to do encourage them to keep up healthy schedules and to have them keep coming back to the app.

What it does

Sonata aims to help primarily college students regulate their time management and sleep schedule. this is used through its clock and alarm features that set a suggested schedule for the user! the schedule includes the time they're sleeping, the free time they have, and what time their classes are. this is curated from the user's input of their schedule itself.

How we built it

We used Figma to create the primary UI design and user flow. illustrations of Ursa and Usagi were made through adobe illustrator!

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge was the difficulty to create a fleshed out app within a tight timeframe--in less than 48 hours! however, after motivating and pushing ourselves to go far and beyond and set a dedicated timeline, we were able to create something we are extremely proud of.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As mentioned in the last section, we are super proud of what we've done in the timeframe we had! The hard effort and the late night staying up was worth it in the end. Additionally, our proudest accomplishment is how well the app turned out when 3/4 of the participants are first-time participants of design-a-thons! Everyone had an important role in making Sonata what it is. For the limited experience we have, we are happy with the result.

What we learned

this whole designathon was a valuable experience that taught us how to create and plan out an app in a short timeframe. we have a better understanding of how to pace ourselves, what needs to be done imminently, and also refine our skills respectively in Figma and Adobe illustrator. we are thankful for this opportunity!

If we had more time..

If we had a more flexible time frame, we would tackle these primary issues:

  1. Refining the UI
  2. Implementing more dynamic animations into the features
  3. More furniture options

Refining the UI: We believe the first ideas we have aren't always the best--there's always room to refine and improve! There was a lot of cycling through ideas and adjusting the UI, and we believe that would continue if we had the chance. For example, we feel the screen for putting in your first name and last name could've been a bit more stylized and refined. However, we settled on our current one due to time constraints.

Implementing more dynamic animations into the features: As we have a more cutesy aesthetic, we would've preferred to make the animations fit the theme too! however, we just didn't have the resources or extra time. even so, we are happy with the smoothness of the animations that are currently in our prototype.

More furniture options: In our prototype, the night market only shows one slide of furniture options. if we had more time, we would've loved to allow the other menus to be clickable too rather than just the 5 stars! with that, we could show the limitless decor options as well.

Conclusion

Overall, we hope you enjoy our project, Sonata. Remember to take care of yourselves and stay comfy. :)
