Inspiration
In sub-Saharan Africa, 1 in 14 children dies before age 5 (UNICEF 2024), and heat-related childhood deaths on the continent have doubled in 20 years. Most of these deaths come from causes that are preventable when a family detects a problem early. But in the four countries we target, parents lack the basic information they need: the official vaccination schedule, simple malnutrition screening, age-appropriate nutrition advice with local foods, fast triage guidance, and heat-risk warnings.
What BebeCare does
A free web platform (phone-number sign-up, French/English) for parents in Benin, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal and Nigeria, with 7 tools: a map of 9,810 real health centers and pharmacies, WHO z-score malnutrition screening, the official up-to-date vaccination calendar, an appointment calculator, local-food nutrition advice, AI pediatric triage, and a heat-peak forecast 6 hours ahead with age-stratified vigilance.
How we built it
A universal clinical core (WHO z-scores, triage rules, i18n, heat model) plus one data file per country (official schedule, OSM facilities, local foods, emergency numbers). Stack: React, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, Leaflet/OpenStreetMap, Open-Meteo, and a lightweight ML heat-forecast model (~2 MB, MAE 0.36 C). The triage logic was designed by a licensed nurse (M2 Pediatric Nursing): clinician-in-the-loop, not black-box AI.
Challenges
Keeping each country's clinical content official and up to date (we verified the 2025-26 schedules per country), covering rural areas where map data is sparse (crowdsourced facility reports planned), and keeping the triage safe: it always defers to a professional and never replaces a doctor.
