Inspiration

On our end, we were most inspired by the research we gathered interviewing people with disabilities, who gave us insights into some of the struggles and difficulties they faced when using online services.

What it does

Our project introduces a concept Estee Lauder app that prioritizes accessibility. This includes key features such as an Accessibility Icon, an Accessible Products Page, Friendly Packaging, Play-Pause functions on videos, and rounded and filled buttons for highlighted contrast. We also put an emphasis on making text larger for improved legibility.

How we built it

In a 4-week sprint, we conducted user research including user interviews and card sorting before starting a design studio. Once we had wireframes made, we conducted usability tests designed in Figma on 3 interviewees. Then we applied our own design system to the wireframes and built out a hi-fidelity version of the app, including a clickable prototype.

Challenges we ran into

One of the major challenges we encountered in the early stages of the project was the gathering of research and identifying suitable participants for interviews. Luckily, we were able to connect with participants from MakeUp on Wheels, as well as Heather Tomko (Blogger/Disability Advocate/former Miss Wheelchair USA).

Accomplishments that we're proud of

“What I really like, and what I think you’ve gotten really well…is not just in accessible in terms like “Oh this fits the WCAG” maybe, whatever the accessibility guidelines are, but it’s actually looking beyond that - like when you’re at what products that may be more or less are accessible. I think that is super important and goes beyond the bare minimum of accessibility.” - Heather Tomko

What we learned

Through our research, we discovered that a significant number of websites and applications fall short of meeting accessibility standards. There is an entire community whose needs are not being met. Most importantly, accessibility is not a one size fits all approach, each disability needs its own accessible solution and it is our job to learn how we can best uncover those solutions, and implementing them into our designs.

What's next for Beauty within Reach

Beauty within Reach would love to further test and ideate on our hi fidelity design to uncover additional oversights that we might have missed to make sure we create the most inclusive experience possible.
