Project Title: Aware: Tactile Identification for Self-Care Independence

Aware is a system of discreet, durable, and tactile silicone stickers designed to help people who are blind or visually impaired independently identify their personal care products. By applying a unique, intuitive texture to bottles and containers, Aware transforms a daily challenge into a simple, confident routine.

The Accessibility Problem

For sighted individuals, grabbing the correct shampoo or lotion is a trivial task performed on autopilot. For the 2.2 billion people worldwide with a vision impairment, this simple act is a daily source of frustration, anxiety, and potential danger. The core problem is the lack of non-visual identification for personal care items. Bottles are often similarly shaped, made of slippery plastic, and their labels are useless to someone who cannot see them. This leads to several significant issues:

  • Loss of Independence : Users must rely on memory ("the shampoo is the big bottle on the left") which fails when bottles are moved or replaced, or must ask others for help, creating a dependency.

  • Safety Risks : Confusing a tube of hydrocortisone cream for toothpaste, or hair removal lotion for body lotion, can have serious chemical or health consequences.

  • Confusion and Stress : The morning or evening routine becomes a moment of anxiety rather than relaxation, undermining the very purpose of self-care.

Current solutions, like rubber bands or safety pins, are unreliable, fall off, and lack a standardized meaning. Aware solves this by providing a consistent, durable, and intuitive system.

The Proposed Solution: Aware

Aware is a system of small, tactile silicone stickers that use a simple, learnable language of textures. The solution is based on three key principles: Intuitiveness, Durability, and Discreetness. Intuitiveness : The textures are designed to be suggestive of their function. Durability : Made from medical-grade, waterproof silicone, Aware stickers are designed to withstand a wet, steamy bathroom environment. They won't peel off, degrade, or lose their tactile quality over time. Discreetness : The stickers are low-profile, come in matte neutral colors (or clear), and blend seamlessly with the product's design. They provide function without drawing attention or clashing with the bathroom's aesthetic.

How it Works:

  1. Apply: The user peels the sticker from its backing and applies it to a clean, dry surface of their product.

  2. Learn: The user learns the simple "texture language": Wave = Wash, Spiral = Moisturize, Sun = Sunscreen.

  3. Identify: Before use, a quick touch tells the user exactly which product they are holding, building a routine of confidence and independence.
