Inspiration
A big inspiration for this project is Mamdani's work as mayor of NYC, especially his push for city maintenance. We want that same energy in Atlanta, so we're taking it into our own hands. Most people don't even know where to report a pothole or a broken sidewalk, so we built an app that makes it simple.
What it does
Snap a photo of a street or campus problem, and AVision turns it into a public ticket for whoever owns the fix: GSU, Georgia Tech, the City of Atlanta (ATL311) or MARTA.
- AI fills in the report: Gemini identifies the issue and possible accessibility barriers, picks the right department, explains why, and drafts an email and phone script. You stay in control: you review everything, and AVision opens the email in your own inbox. It never sends anything for you.
- Privacy first: faces and license plates are blurred and photo location data is removed before anything is published.
- A live map of every ticket, alongside MARTA stations, state routes, the city boundary and campus buildings.
- Community follow-through: anyone can vote "Still there" or "Fixed," and a "Still there" vote offers a follow-up message to the department.
How we built it
- React and Leaflet for the app and map
- FastAPI backend with Tiger Data
- Gemini for photo analysis, picking the department and drafting, with a Microsoft Foundry agent orchestrating
- Face and plate blurring on our own server, so unblurred photos never reach the AI
- Auth0 Google sign-in
- Hosted on Vultr, with auto-deploy from GitHub
Challenges we ran into
- Keeping the AI honest. Gemini picks the department, but only from a hand-checked contact list, and anything in its text that looks like contact info is removed. If Gemini is down, map rules take over.
- Speed. We cut each report down to a single Gemini request, about 10 seconds, with the Foundry agent working alongside instead of in the way.
- Atlanta's tangled ownership. One block can belong to the city, a university, MARTA or the state, so we built our map from official city, state, MARTA and campus data
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to create an impactful, fully realized app at atlantamamdani.photo in one weekend! It was beautiful seeing this idea go from a simple brainstorm to something so real.
What we learned
This was all of our first fully shipped app, from start to finish. We learned:
- how to design and code as a team
- creating custom APIs
- AI agent orchestration & integration
- website hosting
- secure user authentication
- Figma design tools
- smart collaboration on GitHub
- and so much more
What's next for AVision
We're passionate about this project and plan to keep building it. We see AVision growing beyond a maintenance-request app into a place where neighbors work together to take care of their community.
