Inspiration

Millions of elderly and differently abled people face challenges such as inaccessible roads, stairs, and public transport every day. Existing navigation applications prioritize the fastest route rather than the safest and most accessible one. This inspired us to develop AccessAI, an intelligent mobility companion that helps users travel independently and confidently.

What it does

AccessAI offers accessibility-aware route planning, AI-powered obstacle detection using smartphone cameras, voice-guided navigation in Tamil and English, emergency SOS alerts, caregiver live tracking, and recommendations for nearby hospitals, ramps, elevators, and rest areas. It also enables community-driven accessibility updates to support smarter and more inclusive cities.

How we built it

AccessAI was developed using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend, Python Flask for the backend, and SQLite for database management. We utilized OpenCV and Computer Vision techniques for obstacle detection, Google Maps API for navigation, Twilio and email services for notifications, and Text-to-Speech APIs for voice assistance. By integrating AI, geolocation, and accessibility data, we created a personalized navigation experience for users.

Challenges we ran into

One of the major challenges was obtaining accessibility-related datasets and implementing real-time obstacle detection on mobile devices. Integrating accessibility constraints into route planning, ensuring accurate multilingual voice guidance, and maintaining user privacy while enabling caregiver tracking were additional challenges encountered during development.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have developed an inclusive AI solution that promotes independent mobility. Successfully integrating AI-based obstacle detection, voice navigation, emergency SOS, and caregiver tracking demonstrates the project's potential for real-world impact. Additionally, AccessAI has the capability to contribute to smart city initiatives by providing valuable accessibility insights.

What we learned

This project enhanced our knowledge of Computer Vision, OpenCV, AI-powered navigation systems, and geolocation APIs. We also gained experience in designing accessible applications and learned the importance of inclusive technology in improving the quality of life for elderly and differently abled individuals.

What's next for AI Smart Route Guide for Elderly & Differently Abled

Our future plans include developing dedicated Android and iOS applications, integrating wearable devices for health monitoring, implementing offline navigation support, expanding voice assistance to more regional languages, and collaborating with governments to improve accessibility infrastructure. We also aim to leverage crowdsourced data to continuously enhance route recommendations and make cities more accessible for everyone.
