Accident Alert System
Inspiration
Road accidents often result in delayed emergency assistance, which can lead to severe injuries or loss of life. This inspired us to develop an Accident Alert System that automatically detects accidents and sends an alert with the vehicle's location, helping emergency responders reach the accident site faster.
What it Does
The system detects a collision using a vibration or impact sensor. When an accident is detected, the microcontroller processes the sensor data, obtains the GPS location, and sends an SMS alert to predefined emergency contacts through a GSM module. This reduces the time taken to inform others during emergencies.
How We Built It
Hardware
- Arduino Uno
- Vibration/Impact Sensor
- GPS Module
- GSM Module
- Buzzer
- Power Supply
Software
- Arduino IDE
- Embedded C Programming
Working
- The vibration sensor continuously monitors for sudden impacts.
- Arduino analyzes the sensor output.
- If the impact exceeds a predefined threshold, the GPS module retrieves the current location.
- The GSM module sends an SMS containing the accident alert and GPS coordinates.
- The buzzer activates to indicate that an alert has been sent.
Challenges We Faced
- Interfacing the GPS and GSM modules simultaneously.
- Obtaining accurate GPS coordinates in indoor environments.
- Reducing false accident detections caused by road bumps.
- Ensuring reliable SMS transmission under different network conditions.
What We Learned
- Embedded systems programming using Arduino.
- Sensor interfacing and real-time data processing.
- GPS and GSM communication.
- Serial communication protocols.
- Designing practical IoT-based safety solutions.
Future Improvements
- Integrate IoT cloud monitoring for real-time tracking.
- Add an accelerometer and gyroscope for more accurate accident detection.
- Develop a mobile application for instant notifications.
- Automatically notify nearby hospitals and emergency services.
- Include voice assistance and emergency calling features.
Conclusion
The Accident Alert System is a smart and cost-effective safety solution that can significantly reduce emergency response time. By combining sensors, GPS, GSM, and embedded systems, the project demonstrates how technology can help save lives through faster accident reporting.
