Inspiration

The inspiration for Twenty Fifty stems from a fundamental challenge in urban living: the lack of transparency and direct communication between residents and city maintenance departments. Often, citizens notice local issues—such as broken streetlights, potholes, or damaged public property—but feel disconnected from the resolution process. They may report a problem, but they rarely know when it will be addressed, who is working on it, or if it has been resolved.

What it does

Twenty Fifty is a comprehensive urban management platform that facilitates seamless reporting and resolution of city-wide issues. It creates an interconnected ecosystem for residents and specialized maintenance teams. The application operates through two distinct but integrated modes, ensuring that information flows efficiently from the point of discovery to the final resolution.

How we built it

Twenty Fifty was developed as a robust, full-stack application designed for high-performance mapping and secure, departmentalized access. The architecture focuses on real-time data synchronization and a user-friendly interface for both citizens and specialized crews. The frontend was designed to be responsive, ensuring that residents can quickly report issues while on the go using their mobile devices.

The backend consists of a secure API layer that manages user authentication, distinguishing between general residents and authorized crew members. This layer handles the critical logic of routing reports to the correct departmental silos, such as the electricity or sanitation departments. A scalable database stores the entire lifecycle of each report, including status logs and crew notes, while an integrated storage solution handles the high-resolution images attached to each submission.

Challenges we ran into

Developing Twenty Fifty presented several unique challenges, particularly in the realm of logic and real-time communication. One of the primary hurdles was designing an efficient report routing system that could accurately categorize a wide variety of urban issues and deliver them to the correct specialized department without manual intervention. This required an intricate understanding of municipal structures and how they interact with public data.

Furthermore, ensuring real-time synchronization between field crews and the resident dashboard was a significant technical undertaking. When a crew member updates a status in the field, that information must be reflected instantly to the resident to maintain the platform's promise of transparency. Balancing this transparency with the privacy of individual reporters also required a delicate architectural approach, ensuring that public "City Insights" provide value without compromising user security.

What we learned
