Inspiration

The idea for Zwap was born out of the growing concern about fashion waste and the exploitation of workers in the fast fashion industry. Each year, millions of garments are discarded into landfills, often after being worn just a few times. This waste is compounded by the exploitative practices in sweatshops, where workers are forced to produce cheap clothes in unsafe conditions. Shockingly, Australia ranks number one in the world for fast fashion consumption per capita, further driving the cycle of overproduction and environmental degradation.

However, there’s a glimmer of hope. Australians are increasingly donating their old clothes, showing a willingness to keep garments in circulation. Even more promising, 2 in 5 Gen Zers are open to wearing second-hand clothing, signaling a shift in consumer behavior toward sustainability. Zwap was created to meet this shift, offering a platform where fashion and sustainability intersect. It empowers users to thrift and donate, ensuring that fashion not only stays stylish but also eco-friendly.

For the design inspiration, we drew from avant-garde fashion trends and the vibrant, bold aesthetics of Gen Z pop culture to create an interface that feels both innovative and visually engaging.

What we learned

Working on Zwap has deepened our understanding of the relationship between sustainability and fashion. We realized that sustainability doesn’t always mean sacrificing style—it’s about making better choices with what we already own. From thrifting and buying from sustainable brands to mending clothes, washing with care, and even repurposing old garments into rags, We’ve learned that small, mindful steps can create a significant impact. It’s not just about new eco-friendly materials, but how we extend the life of our existing clothes.

We also learned that when designing an app, simplicity is key. Creating a delightful user journey meant stripping away unnecessary features, focusing on the essentials, and avoiding complexity. By streamlining the process, users are more likely to engage and take action. This project also taught us that iteration is critical—no great design happens in one shot. Each version helped refine the idea, bringing clarity and usability to the forefront.

Understanding Gen Z’s behavior was a vital part of the journey. They are trend-driven but care about the environment, so creating a balance between these two factors was crucial. It became clear that UX matters just as much, if not more, than the UI. A visually appealing app can only go so far without a thoughtful user experience. By focusing on ease, engagement, and simplicity, we realized that the right interface could drive the desired sustainable behaviors effortlessly.

How we built Zwap

We began by carefully mapping out the user journey flow, focusing on what actions users would take to complete tasks like signing up, thrifting clothes, or donating items. The goal was to ensure a smooth, intuitive process for every interaction. After multiple discussions, we outlined the necessary screens to make the entire experience seamless. From there, we moved into Figma to bring these ideas to life. For visuals, we incorporated images from Unsplash, and sourced icons from Phosphor Icons to maintain a consistent, modern aesthetic. To give Zwap its own unique identity, we also created custom components to ensure the design felt original and aligned with the bold, vibrant preferences of Gen Z users.

Once the initial design was complete, we moved into user testing, gathering valuable feedback on how the app functioned and felt. Through multiple iterations, we identified areas of improvement, particularly focusing on enhancing the flow and visual appeal of the app. Based on user input, we refined the screens, made the interactions smoother, and optimized the overall experience. This iterative process allowed us to continuously fine-tune Zwap, making sure it not only worked flawlessly but also resonated with our target audience.

Challenges

One of our biggest challenges was making sure Zwap resonated with Gen Z. We needed to incorporate elements that spoke to their preferences, using the right slang and behaviors that align with their tech-savvy and trend-conscious mindset. Designing visuals that would capture their attention, from bold colors to clean, minimalist interfaces, was essential. Coming up with these visuals while keeping the app simple was a balancing act. We focused on cutting down complications by stripping away unnecessary features and keeping the app straightforward without sacrificing functionality.

Another challenge was the lack of time. With tight deadlines, prototyping the app and testing it was tough. Making sure everything—from the user flow to the visuals—fit within the timeframe was difficult. Prototyping the interactions for the swiping process proved to be complex as well, ensuring it felt smooth and intuitive. The real test was making it all align with Gen Z’s fast-paced digital habits, ensuring the app was not just functional but appealing and engaging to a generation that demands both style and speed.
