Inspiration
We were inspired to create ZotAffirm because we believe in the power of spreading positivity! We believe that with positive affirmations we can help give others motivation and reassurance and contribute to their self-care. As students, we wanted to create a simple yet inviting resource for students who sometimes may need it, especially during those tough moments in the school year. It’s our way of helping students take a moment to breathe, reflect, and remind themselves that they’re doing great. Join us in practicing self-care and spreading positivity throughout our UCI community.
How we built it
We started with lo-fi wireframes that we put together in Figma. We also designed most of our visual components on Figma. For the code, we used JavaScript and HTML/CSS.
What it does
By taking our quick quiz, you can share your current mood—whether you're feeling bad, not so good, neutral, good, or amazing—and let us know what’s stressing you out, be it academics, future plans, home life, platonic or romantic relationships, or self-image. Based on your responses, we provide personalized affirmations and resources aimed at uplifting your spirits and supporting your mental well-being. Being students ourselves, we know how overwhelming life can be, with academics, relationships, work, and more. With this in mind, we aim to provide students with a touch of positivity in their daily lives, to make being a student a little bit easier. Our mission is to help students navigate these stressors with a little more ease and a lot more encouragement.
Challenges we ran into
Having different coding backgrounds gave us the opportunity to learn from each other. We ran into issues when using JavaScript, as none of us had proficient knowledge of the language. However, we utilized the resources given to us by VenusHacks, including the workshops and mentors, that broadened our perspective on how to approach this project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of working as a team and getting a functional minimalistic website created. All of us coming from different backgrounds, including majors and coding skills, created a challenge to begin with. However, after communicating our ideas and skills, we created this website combining our interests and passions.
What we learned
All four of us have never participated in a hackathon before, therefore every aspect of this event was unfamiliar to us. Additionally, for most of us it was our first time using HTML and JavaScript, using Replit we were able to learn and enhance our skills in these languages to create the website. We learned different style tricks to create the website, and also the process in outlining and creating the ideas for a website. We were able to learn more about UI/UX design as well, through various workshops and resources like Figma.
What's next for ZotAffirm
We would love to have more time to build additional resources into ZotAffirm, such as meditations, guided breathing exercises, and more. We also hope to collaborate with on-campus organizations dedicated to mental health. We can improve the specificity of each category and add another question asking what specific aspect of that category is giving them stress.
