Inspiration:
In our Tibetan community, finding and organizing events is a real challenge. Information is scattered, making it hard for attendees to discover events, especially for those less tech-savvy. Organizers struggled with overlapping schedules and inefficient planning, leading to low turnout and wasted resources.
We knew our community needed a better way to connect, so we created zomzom—a centralized platform that simplifies event discovery and organization. Now, our traditions and connections can thrive, making it easier for everyone to celebrate our culture together.
What it does:
zomzom is a web app that centralizes community events, making it easier for members to discover and participate in gatherings. It also promotes Himalayan culture by highlighting culturally relevant monthly themes.
How we built it:
Using HTML, CSS, Node.js, Express.js, SQLite.
Challenges we faced:
We faced challenges merging the back and front end as we had different people working on it. Maintaining a clean comprehensive code that was easy to communicate to team members was the best way for us to navigate the challenge. We were posed with this challenge quite near the end of the project working timeline, so it added more difficulty when we were navigating in a tight time frame. We realize this is something that requires quite a bit of time and would have been better with some basic common set-up between the front and the back end initially. We also had to put a lot of effort into making sure the design was as creative, clean, and user-friendly as possible. This posed a challenge because starting with a blank slate made it so that our options were endless and we had to be very purposeful with every choice.
Accomplishments that we are proud of
include having a front and a back end that are connected, allowing for the core functionality of the webpage. We are also excited to continue on this project so that this can be something that can not only be used by us but by our friends and family as well. Our teamwork, communication, and support all were positive, allowing us to create something we all cared about and enjoy the building process.
We learned that
the planning process is really important. Having a clear goal and breakdown of how to approach a problem really makes the problem-solving process much smoother. With a figma template, we were able to tackle the front-end design much more efficiently.
Next up for zomzom,
Event Curators will be able to collaborate and co-host events with other organizations, offering subscriber options and special features with badges. They’ll also be able to book event spaces directly through zomzom. For users, the platform will offer subscriptions and the ability to follow organizations, see which events friends are attending, and receive personally curated event recommendations, with rewards for participation. Additional features include text and email notifications, the ability to vote for favorite events and organizations, hosting private events, and much more!
