Inspiration
Zomburgers draws inspiration from childhood imagination, where gross or silly ideas like "brain burgers" and lightheartedly battling zombies spark laughter and excitement for users of all ages. Transforming something typically scary, like zombies, into a funny, relatable cooking game was so much fun to dream up!
What it does
Zomburgers - Crypt Cookout is a fast-paced VR and mobile game where players defend their cooking shacks from an onslaught of zombies by serving them grossly creative burgers. Using wacky ingredients like fresh brains, ogre toes, frog legs and maggots, players grill, assemble, and toss burgers to appease the hungry undead. When hit with a burger, zombies hilariously go back to their coffins that pop up from the ground. It’s playable across VR, web, and mobile platforms, designed to keep players laughing and competing to see who can survive chaos mode and serve the most burgers! VR players must tenderize, grill and toss their favorite ingredients while mobile players have an asynchronous experience of a fast paced cooking sim! Players can join in on mobile any time, anywhere to earn even more Zombux to snag their favorite Sizzle Skins, Deadly Decor or hilarious Noggin Toppers.
How we built it
This world was conceptualized in primitive shapes and brought to life using 3D modeling software, where we sculpted every creepy ingredient and haunting detail. From slimy brain patties to creepy coffins, each element was carefully crafted in a digital cauldron to create the perfect balance of spooky and silly.
Challenges we ran into
Since I decided to make this a hybrid VR and mobile experience that players will love to visit on both platforms, we had to individualize the experience while still allowing players on VR, web or mobile to feel inclined to keep coming back. On the technical side, creating an experience that is fully compatible with all three platforms was challenging, as UI, interactions and other major mechanics had to be asynchronous while still being cohesive for all player types. This meant realigning UI elements, spawning in stations, adding mobile-specific code and a few other hurdles that we overcame to bring this world to life.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud that I was able to incorporate a universal idea of spooky fun - zombies, gross out, hilarious zombie one liners, with my existing love of rainbow design, making 8 different rainbow colored crypts for players to choose from and decorate while challenging friends to beat their top score on the leaderboards and meet them at the selfie spot for some hilarious photo ops.
What we learned
I learned how to creatively use the camera API, angles and custom UI gizmos to seamlessly incorporate mobile players into this vibrant 3D space.
What's next for Zomburgerz - Crypt Cookout
The next step for Zomburgerz is to develop a VS game mode where up to 8 players can directly challenge each other to an intense match of burger building to determine who is the top zombie chef. Additionally, we are planning to expand the shops with more Sizzle Skins, Noggin Toppers and Deadly Decorations as well as being able to take your tenderizer into a future zombie-themed PVE game.
