Inspiration
Zombified2030 was born from the intersection of survival storytelling, social decision-making, and online community dynamics. We wanted to capture the raw tension of a post-apocalyptic world — not through traditional gameplay mechanics alone, but through collective choice. The idea came from imagining a digital campfire where players’ voices, votes, and words decide who ventures into danger and who stays behind. The emotion of community, sacrifice, and uncertainty drives the experience.
What it does
Zombified2030 is a community-driven survival game where players shape the story together. Each in-game day, the camp must choose three survivors to go beyond the walls into the infected city. Players “speak” at dawn — submitting short messages, pleas, or strategies — and the community votes on who earns the armor. The top three voted survivors face the day’s challenges, while the rest wait, hope, and narrate.
It’s part roleplay, part social experiment — a mix of storytelling, strategy, and suspense where every voice can shift the fate of the camp.
How we built it
We built Zombified2030 using:
Frontend: javascript/ typescript with CSS for a minimalist, bleak aesthetic
Backend: Node.js + Express to handle player sessions, votes, and real-time story updates
Real-time Interaction: Devvit for live vote tracking and narrative updates
Challenges we ran into
Balancing realism and engagement: Making the game tense without making it unfair or repetitive.
Narrative coherence: Keeping a procedurally influenced story cohesive across multiple player choices.
Time pressure: Building both a stable platform and an emotionally resonant story within limited time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a living story world that evolves through community decisions.
Players felt genuine emotional stakes — guilt, hope, loss — for virtual characters they shaped.
The blend of narrative and mechanics achieved something rare: collective storytelling that feels personal.
Our design encourages empathy and discussion rather than pure competition.
What we learned
Storytelling can be more powerful when decentralized — when players share the narrative load.
Emotional design matters just as much as game mechanics.
Building trust in a community game requires transparency in logic and outcome generation.
Sometimes, the most engaging gameplay comes from silence, waiting, and uncertainty — not constant action.
