Inspiration

I wanted vocabulary practice to feel like something you choose to do, rather than another list of words to memorize. That idea became Zombie Vocab, a mobile game where players learn words, follow a story, and answer vocabulary questions by defeating the zombie carrying the right answer.

How I Built It

I built the app with React Native, Expo, and TypeScript for iOS and Android. Players start with a placement scan and a study plan, then choose between daily practice and a chapter-based story mode. I created word banks and quiz generation for the battles, including definition, synonym, and fill-in-the-blank questions. Missed words return for review, and progress is saved through Supabase.

Challenges

The hardest part was making the learning and game systems work together. Questions needed to be varied and fair while still drawing from the words in each chapter. I also had to make onboarding, study progress, and gameplay feel like one continuous experience across two mobile platforms.

What I Learned

I learned how much care it takes to turn an educational idea into a complete product. Building the core game was only part of the work; the placement flow, review system, progress tracking, and small interface decisions all affect whether someone will keep learning. The project taught me to connect technical choices to the experience they create for the player.

What’s Next for Zombie Vocab

My next step is to release the next story chapter and keep building toward the planned 40-chapter campaign. I also want to improve how the app brings back missed words, so practice responds more closely to what each player needs to learn.

As more people play, I’ll use their feedback to refine the questions, pacing, and onboarding. The goal is to make Zombie Vocab a game players enjoy returning to—and a study tool that helps words stick.
