Inspiration
Most zodiac tools treat Western and Chinese astrology as separate lookup tables. Zodiac Weave was built to show the more interesting intersection between them while making an easy-to-miss rule explicit: a Chinese zodiac year does not always begin on January 1.
What it does
Enter a birth date and Zodiac Weave returns:
- Your Western zodiac sign, Chinese zodiac animal, Five Element, and Yin-Yang polarity.
- One of 144 original Chinese × Western personality profiles.
- A transparent year-boundary choice: Lunar New Year by default, with an optional Li Chun estimate.
- Compatibility views and a browsable directory covering all 144 combinations.
- A shareable result card without requiring an account.
The calculator is free, works without sign-up, and performs its core calculation in the browser.
How we built it
The site is built with Astro, TypeScript, and React for interactive components, then deployed on Vercel. A local calculation engine and structured editorial data keep the result fast and deterministic. Zod validates data at system boundaries, while lightweight rate limiting protects the share-card workflow.
Challenges
The hardest part was handling January and February dates honestly. The Chinese zodiac year boundary can change depending on the convention, so the product exposes that choice instead of burying it. A second challenge was creating meaningful, distinct editorial profiles across 144 combinations without turning them into repetitive templates.
What we learned
For symbolic tools, clarity about the rule matters as much as the result. Showing the selected boundary convention gives users a more trustworthy answer and makes disagreements understandable.
