Inspiration

A neuroscience lab at UW-Madison needed a public-facing website but had no existing web presence to organize their research, people, and publications for visitors, prospective students, and collaborators.

What it does

A clean, organized website for the lab covering their research focus, lab members, publications, recruitment information, and contact details — giving the lab a professional public identity and making it easy for prospective students or collaborators to find what they need.

How I built it

Built and deployed with Next.js, focused on translating highly specialized mechanotransduction research into a clear, accessible information architecture for a general audience, with a responsive design that works well across devices.

Challenges I ran into

The biggest challenge wasn't technical — it was information design. Mechanotransduction research is dense and technical, so figuring out how to organize and present it so non-specialists (prospective students, other departments) could still navigate the site meaningfully took real back-and-forth with the lab.

What's next for Zheng Lab Website

Continuing to update the site as the lab publishes new research and takes on new members.
