Each week, we find ourselves throwing away so much food, shamelessly unaware of the unnecessary waste we are producing. Is there a more sustainable and mindful approach to prevent this cycle of disposal? Can we harness the power of the technology at our fingertips to address and resolve this issue?

What it does

ZeroWaste strives to revolutionize your shopping habits by optimizing purchases and creating awareness about items nearing expiration, ensuring that nothing goes to waste. Embrace a smarter, more sustainable lifestyle with ZeroWaste

How we built it

Utilizing OCR and AI technology, we streamline the process by capturing data directly from a snapshot of your grocery list to process and store in an SQL database. We actively monitor the expiration dates of items and analyze your spending habits to provide more accurate and conservative estimates for your upcoming grocery list. The React front-end displays a convenient calendar view, allowing you to visualize all your items and their freshness at a glance.

Challenges we ran into

From not having the OCR to running out of credits, to the front end completely breaking, the challenges we faced were countless. The fights we had regarding how to handle these issues almost destroyed friendships but, that did not deter us.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

"We came out with a gorgeous product that wonderfully captures data directly from a picture to a database. We navigated problems we never knew we could solve in the first place. The last 24 hours have been simultaneously the most stressful and rewarding time of our lives."

What we learned

Friendships are strengthened by conflicts, no problem is impossible to solve if you have the right people around you. coding is a journey with many obstacles, The coding journey is riddled with obstacles, and we learned firsthand that nothing ever works perfectly on the first try, relentless persistence is the key to success.

What's next for ZeroWaste

In our future roadmap for ZeroWaste, we envision incorporating a recipe generator. This feature will intelligently utilize items closest to expiration and generate personalized meal suggestions, ensuring not only optimal resource utilization but also inspiring delightful culinary experiences.
