Project Story - ZeroRisk Sentinel
Inspiration
Cybersecurity threats are getting smarter every year — but most people still have no idea whether the files they download are safe. I wanted to build something that gives real protection without requiring installations, antivirus software, or technical skills.
So the idea became clear: A powerful, fully browser-based security scanner that feels like a hacker tool but works for everyone.
What it does
ZeroRisk Sentinel is a client-side file security scanner that analyzes files directly in your browser. No uploads. No server processing. Total privacy.
It provides:
- Malware detection using real patterns & signatures
- Extension spoofing detection (fake PDF.exe, RLO attacks, etc.)
- Keylogger detection using behavior-based patterns
- File header inspection (magic bytes)
- Live animated scanning with threat scores
- Real-time queue, progress, threat meter, and console logs
- A full cyber-themed UI inspired by real-world SOC dashboards
Everything happens locally, instantly, and securely.
How we built it
The scanner is built entirely with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and a few powerful frontend libraries:
- Anime.js for motion & animation
- Typed.js for Hacker-style hero text
- TailwindCSS for layout & responsiveness
- IntersectionObserver + custom animations for smooth UI
- Canvas Matrix animation for environmental cyber-visuals
Pure JavaScript for:
- file parsing
- header analysis
- signature scanning
- threat scoring
- UI state management
The entire threat detection logic — scanning, parsing, scoring, analyzing — is written by hand without any backend.
Challenges we ran into
File analysis inside the browser Browsers are sandboxed, so reading binary headers, scanning patterns, and detecting malicious behavior needed custom logic.
Detecting extension spoofing safely Implementing real magic-byte comparison and RLO (Right-to-Left Override) checks required low-level byte handling.
Building a UI that feels like a real cybersecurity tool Balancing aesthetics, performance, and clarity took a lot of iteration.
Real-time scanning performance Reading large files and scanning them fast meant optimizing every loop and regex.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a complete cybersecurity tool that runs entirely in a browser
- Added accurate threat scoring & multi-level detections
- Designed a professional hacker-themed interface
- Fully implemented the Matrix background + animated dashboard
- Created a tool that is both educational and actually useful
- No backend at all — 100% privacy and client-side security
What we learned
- How deep file detection works (magic bytes, headers, spoofing techniques)
- How malware strings, signatures, and heuristics are structured
- Performance tricks to handle real-time scanning on the web
- UI/UX design specific to cybersecurity dashboards
- The power of modern web APIs
What’s next for ZeroRisk Sentinel
- Adding PDF/EXE deep analysis modules
- Adding a browser sandbox to simulate unsafe behavior
- Generating downloadable scan reports
- More signature databases & machine-learning assisted detection
- Turning it into a full web-based SOC Dashboard
ZeroRisk Sentinel is just the first step — the goal is to make powerful security tools accessible to everyone, right from the browser.
