Floods don't become disasters the moment water starts rising. By then, it's already too late. The real challenge is giving people enough time to prepare, respond, and make better decisions before the situation escalates.
That idea became the foundation of ZERO, the Flood Nowcast module of SentinelTwin. Instead of simply predicting rainfall, ZERO combines weather intelligence, flood risk forecasting, and real-time situational awareness to identify vulnerable regions, estimate flood severity, and support faster emergency response through an interactive dashboard.
Building ZERO taught us that prediction alone isn't enough. AI creates the most impact when it helps people make decisions. Throughout the project, we focused on turning complex environmental data into clear, actionable insights that emergency teams and local authorities can understand in seconds.
Like every hackathon, there were challenges balancing accuracy with real-time performance, integrating multiple data sources, and presenting information in a way that remains useful under pressure. But every iteration brought us closer to our goal.
ZERO is our step towards making disaster management more proactive than reactive, helping communities prepare before disaster strikes rather than responding after it's already too late.
