KaamConnect — Connecting Workers with Opportunities
Inspiration
In India, many daily-wage workers such as electricians, carpenters, painters, plumbers, and construction workers struggle to find reliable job opportunities. At the same time, contractors often face difficulties finding skilled workers quickly.
We wanted to build a platform that connects these two groups and makes finding work and hiring workers simpler, faster, and more accessible.
Our inspiration was simple: Every skilled worker deserves an opportunity.
What It Does
KaamConnect is a worker-job marketplace designed to connect skilled workers with contractors through a simple digital platform.
The platform focuses on:
- Worker Dashboard: Browse available jobs and find opportunities based on skills and location.
- Contractor Dashboard: Post job requirements and find suitable workers.
- Job Applications: Allow workers to apply for available jobs.
- Booking Management: Track application and work-booking progress.
- Work Status: Display stages such as booking requested, accepted, work started, and completed.
- AI Assistant Concept: Provide an interface for helping users navigate the platform, with multilingual AI support planned for Telugu, Hindi, and English.
Our goal is to make job discovery and workforce management easier for both workers and contractors.
How We Built It
We developed the application using Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, and Android Studio.
The implementation focuses on a simple interface, role-based screens, job browsing, contractor job posting, application workflows, and booking-status demonstrations.
We also explored a web-based version using React, TypeScript, and Vite to make the platform accessible through browsers on desktop and mobile devices.
The current prototype uses demonstration data for several workflows. A shared backend, persistent database, production authentication, real-time GPS tracking, and payment integration are part of our planned development.
Challenges We Faced
During development, we encountered several challenges:
- Designing separate experiences for workers and contractors.
- Building navigation between multiple application screens.
- Managing application state and booking-status updates.
- Resolving Kotlin and Jetpack Compose compilation errors.
- Designing a simple interface that can be used by people with different levels of technical experience.
- Planning location sharing with user consent and appropriate privacy considerations.
We approached these challenges by developing the application incrementally and testing the main user workflows.
What We Learned
This project helped us understand how to:
- Build user interfaces using Jetpack Compose.
- Structure an application with multiple screens and roles.
- Manage application state and user workflows.
- Design a digital marketplace around a real-world problem.
- Plan the integration of backend services, databases, and AI capabilities.
Most importantly, we learned that technology should solve practical problems and be accessible to the people who need it.
What's Next?
Our future development plans include:
- Building a complete responsive web platform.
- Integrating a secure backend and persistent database.
- Implementing production-ready authentication.
- Adding multilingual AI assistance in Telugu, Hindi, and English.
- Developing consent-based location features.
- Integrating secure payment services.
- Testing the platform with actual workers and contractors.
KaamConnect aims to bridge the gap between skills and opportunities, one connection at a time.
