Inspiration

In today's fast-paced world, stress and mental fatigue are common. I wanted to build a voice-first solution that provides instant relaxation without requiring users to look at a screen. "ZenSpace" leverages Alexa's conversational power to guide users into a state of calm using just their voice.

What it does

ZenSpace is a custom Alexa skill designed for quick mental wellness breaks. When a user launches the skill, it offers two main paths:

  1. A 2-minute deep breathing exercise to lower heart rate and reduce stress.
  2. Immersive text-guided relaxing ambient sounds to help the user refocus during work or study.

How I built it

I built this skill using the Alexa Developer Console and the Alexa Skills Kit (ASK) SDK for Node.js. The logic is entirely hosted on Amazon's serverless infrastructure (Alexa-hosted Lambda).

Challenges I ran into

The biggest challenge was creating smooth conversational flows and crafting text-to-speech descriptions that genuinely feel soothing and meditative. Balancing strict timeline constraints with custom intent handling also required careful optimization.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I am proud that I successfully deployed a working serverless voice application from scratch. The skill effectively provides real-time ambient relaxation prompts with very low latency.

What I learned

I learned a lot about Voice User Interface (VUI) design principles, custom slot/intent routing in Node.js, and how to utilize Alexa-hosted backend environments for fast deployment.

What's next for ZenSpace

Next, I plan to integrate AWS DynamoDB to track user session streaks and add real-time ambient audio streaming (audio player interface) for true high-quality soundscapes.
