⚠️ Demo & Hosting Status
Zeno is currently not publicly hosted.
The submitted project is a working Android prototype, but the backend is not currently deployed on a public server. Because of this, the application cannot currently be used as a live online service.
The demo video demonstrates the implemented UI, product experience, and core functionality of Zeno. The lack of public hosting is a deployment limitation of the submitted prototype, not a representation of the intended final product.
Project Story
As a student, I often face a simple but frustrating problem: finding an AI assistant that actually understands what I am studying instead of giving generic answers that may not match my curriculum.
This inspired me to build Zeno, an AI-powered educational platform designed to make studying easier.
The idea behind Zeno is simple: instead of switching between a PDF reader, a timer, focus sounds, and a separate AI chatbot, Zeno brings these parts together into one study workshop.
Zeno was built entirely as a solo project, combining an Android application, backend services, authentication, databases, AI integration, and an educational RAG pipeline into one product.
Why Zeno?
A natural question is: Why not just upload the PDF to ChatGPT or Gemini?
The answer is that the problem is not simply getting an AI to read a PDF. Modern AI assistants are already very capable of doing that.
The problem is the study experience around the AI.
A student should not have to build their own study environment by combining several different tools. They should be able to open their study material, start a focused study session, manage their study time, use sounds that help them concentrate, and ask for help whenever they get stuck without leaving the study environment.
That is what Zeno is trying to build.
Instead of the student going to an AI to study, Zeno makes the AI part of the place where the student studies.
This is especially relevant to students in Egypt, where many students rely heavily on digital textbooks, PDFs, lecture materials, and study notes. Zeno is designed around this real student workflow and the problems that come with it.
Of course, if someone only wants to ask one question about a PDF, ChatGPT or Gemini may already be enough. Zeno is not trying to claim otherwise.
Our goal is bigger:
Make studying itself easier.
The Study Workshop
Zeno is designed to become a place where students can bring their study material, study from it, and have an AI assistant available whenever they need help.
The educational books and materials are securely stored and hosted on the server, making them instantly accessible inside Zeno rather than requiring the student to manually upload a PDF every time they want to study.
The student can choose the material they want to study, open it as a PDF, start a Study Session, and ask the AI about what they are learning.
The AI is connected to the educational content through Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), allowing it to retrieve relevant information from the student's study material instead of relying only on its general knowledge.
Study Sessions
One of Zeno's core experiences is the Study Session.
Students can study directly from their educational PDF while using tools designed to help them stay focused.
A Study Session includes:
- Pomodoro-based studying to help students structure their study time.
- Focus sounds that students can choose according to what helps them concentrate.
- The ability to study directly from the educational PDF.
- AI assistance whenever the student gets stuck or needs an explanation.
- An integrated Chat button that opens a dropdown chat interface.
The AI interaction inside the Study Session is currently text-based, not voice-based.
The student simply presses Chat, a dropdown opens, and they can type their question while continuing their study session.
This means the student does not have to leave the study environment every time they need to ask something.
Core Features
Zeno currently provides features such as:
- AI-powered educational conversations.
- Curriculum-aware question answering.
- Retrieval of relevant educational content through RAG.
- Study Sessions with Pomodoro-based studying.
- Focus sounds with selectable options.
- In-session AI assistance through an integrated text chat.
- Studying directly from cloud-hosted educational PDF materials seamlessly accessed through Zeno.
- Conversation history.
- Personalized student information.
- Email authentication and account management.
- A dedicated Android experience designed for Arabic and English users.
- Support for Arabic, English, and mixed Arabic-English educational content.
Provided To Whom?
To deliver the highest possible quality, we chose to start with a focused niche—exclusively serving high school students in Egypt—with a clear roadmap to scale to other countries over time.
Target Audience
Zeno is primarily designed for students who need an accessible AI learning assistant that can help them understand difficult concepts, review their curriculum, and ask questions whenever they need help.
It is especially focused on students who study in Arabic, while also supporting English and mixed Arabic-English educational content.
The idea comes from a real student problem: students often have their educational content in PDFs and digital materials, but the actual process of studying requires them to combine several unrelated tools.
Zeno aims to bring that experience together.
Challenges
Building Zeno as a solo project was challenging because it required connecting several different systems into one reliable product.
One of the biggest challenges was building the communication between the Android application and the backend while keeping authentication, sessions, conversations, and user data synchronized.
Another major challenge was building the educational RAG pipeline and preparing educational content so that the AI could retrieve relevant information instead of relying only on its general knowledge.
I also had to handle:
- Designing a reliable FastAPI backend and database architecture.
- Integrating the Android application with real backend APIs.
- Handling authentication, access tokens, refresh tokens, and email verification.
- Supporting Arabic RTL layouts alongside English LTR content.
- Handling Arabic and English text together without breaking the UI.
- Making the application work correctly under network failures and server errors.
- Building a clean and responsive chat experience.
- Managing and processing educational PDF content for the RAG system.
- Connecting the AI experience with the Study Session and its Pomodoro workflow.
What I Learned
Building Zeno taught me that creating an AI application is not just about connecting an AI model to a chat interface.
The difficult part is building the entire system around it: reliable educational data, retrieval, APIs, authentication, databases, mobile integration, error handling, and a user experience that students can actually use.
Building it alone also taught me how interconnected the different parts of a real AI product are. A good AI experience depends not only on the model, but also on the quality of the data, retrieval system, backend architecture, and the interface through which the student interacts with it.
Through Zeno, I learned how to connect AI with real educational data and turn it into a complete study experience rather than just a chatbot.
Roadmap
Zeno is still evolving, and our long-term goal is to make it much more personalized.
Text-Based Study Materials
We plan to expand Zeno with more structured text-based educational content that students can study directly inside the platform.
Question Bank
A future version will include a question bank where students can practice questions related to their curriculum.
The AI could also help explain mistakes, provide hints, and identify the topics where the student needs more practice.
Understanding the Student's Level
One of our main goals is for Zeno to eventually understand the student's learning level.
By analyzing things such as the student's progress, questions, mistakes, and performance, Zeno could identify the areas where the student needs more support.
The goal is not simply to give every student the same study material, but to make the learning experience adapt to the individual student.
Personalized Notes, Study Guides, and PDFs
Based on the student's level and areas of weakness, we want Zeno to eventually generate personalized notes, study guides, booklets, and PDFs specifically designed for that student.
For example, if a student struggles with a particular topic, Zeno could create a simpler explanation, focused notes, additional examples, and practice questions around that topic.
The long-term vision is for Zeno to help students not only study their existing material, but also create the material they need to improve.
Our Goal
Our goal with Zeno is simple:
Make studying easier.
We want Zeno to become a study workshop where students can find their educational materials, study directly from their PDFs, use Pomodoro sessions and focus sounds, ask the AI anything they need, practice questions, understand their weaknesses, and eventually receive personalized study materials designed around their own level.
The goal is not to build another general-purpose AI chatbot.
The goal is to build a place where students can actually study.
