Inspiration

ZenBand was inspired by a very common problem that we face as students - staying awake at our early morning lectures. Staying awake is very important not just for students, but for anyone working towards a goal during the day, as inability to function and stay alert during the day makes you waste precious minutes and hours, impairs your ability to do your job properly, etc.

What it does

ZenBand is a bracelet which uses vibrotactile stimuli to either help the user stay alert during the day by delivering shock-like vibrations to the wrist, or help the user control their pulse and fall asleep or just reduce stress by sending an array of gentler vibrations.

How we built it

First we came up with the idea and how it would work, what kind of features would it have. The design would have to be very plain so that it is easy to wear with regular outfits and doesn't stand out as something out of the ordinary. Then we delved into finding scientific research that would show that what we are working towards is realistically possible, started working on our pitch and designed a landing page for the project using the JavaScript framework Next.js as well sketched the design of the app.

Challenges we ran into

As this project is research based, the biggest challenge we ran into was finding research that backed up that our idea was:

  1. solving a real problem
  2. is our hypothesis of using vibrotactile stimuli for these two polar opposite goals even viable.

At the end we did find empirical evidence that supported both of our ideas, as well as competitors that have developed a similar concept that we came up with already, backing up that what we are doing is realistic and accomplishable.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • coming up with an idea that all of us found useful and would be interested in realizing
  • creation of an aesthetically pleasing landing website
  • our research into the viability of the project
  • participating in our first hackathon

What we learned

The most difficult part is to come up with the idea. We should study competitors in detail to learn what could be improved.

What's next for ZenBand

Continue research, use help of experts in the field, attract investors and participate in business incubators to develop the idea to the next level and have successful start-up in Europe.
