Inspiration
Have you ever felt really really nervous? Your heart started pounding, you got sweaty all of a sudden, your stomach started feeling funny or your chest hurts or you had trouble breathing? Feeling anxious or nervous is common but feeling it so much that it's starting to affect your day-to-day life can often be a sign of a mental health condition. Millions of people all around the world are affected by mental health illnesses and this shows how much it is impacting us socially, financially, and physically. 1 in 9 people has a moderate or a severe mental health condition and often their life span is reduced by 10 to 20 years compared to the rest of the population.
What it does
Zen Monke provides you a safe haven to attain your state of Zen and achieve your Inner peace. With activities and games, we help you to calm down and ground yourself when feeling really anxious, panicky, or extreme emotions like anger or sadness. We use activities like Guided Meditation and Music therapy along with other games which have been scientifically shown to reduce anxiety, depression, and other such mental illnesses in a fun and interactive way. We also provide resources that educate you on the different mental health conditions and what symptoms they present as well as provide mental health hotlines all in one place.
Problems we faced
Some of the issues we face while building our product mainly included time constraints, with our project being started a little later than we intended, along with a 12-hour time difference between our members.
Accomplishment that we're proud of
We are proud of our product, as we were tackling other our restraints as mentioned above. For most of the members in the group, it was our first hackathon, so the product we were able to produce alongside our learning curve is something we are happy with.
What we learned
Zen Monkey has taught us many of the logistics that come with developing a website and features that seemingly may come across as simple to do but, in reality, are difficult with the different factors that come alongside it. Some of us learned how hackathons work regarding the overall process that we can carry over to future projects and events we participate in. Most importantly, our creation has given us a deeper insight and understanding of what mental health truly is and how tackling this issue can be approached through simple techniques and overall lowering the stigma that surrounds the topic.
What's next for Zen Monke?
The sky's the limit for Zen Monke! The features that could be added are endless, including allowing users to create accounts to interact with one another in discussion posts, a regularly updated newsletter not just regarding the site, but motivation subscribers can receive every day, and even games that can benefit different approaches of how people prefer to cope with their struggles.
