Inspiration

Millions of African learners face the challenge of access to education due to language barrier, poor connectivity, lack of tools, etc. Zem is designed to bridge that gap by offering multiple language support and AI interaction. Zem showcases what access to quality education looks like.

What it does

Zem is practically an AI powered learning assistant that interacts in English, Pidgin, Hausa and Yoruba (I intend to incorporate more languages like Arabic, Swahili, Zulu, French, etc). Learners can ask Zem anything and they receive responses in their preferred language, they also get to upload lesson notes for an audio-text interaction and summaries that can be downloaded for those that prefer to learn by listening.

How we built it

The entire UI was built directly in bolt.new Generated voice responses with ElevenLabs AI welcome video for the homepage using Tavus Deployed on Netlify and got a domain on Entri Attempted using Lingo

Challenges we ran into

Navigating Bolt.new as a first time vibe coder and building solo for that matter was no small feat I had problems syncing audio files from ElevenLabs into Bolt Domain deployment and payment issues - there is a lot of restrictions and limitations Lingo does not support multiple African languages Imposter Syndrome; Burnout

Accomplishments that we're proud of

First off, successfully building and deploying what I thought was going to remain just a mere idea in my head The voice integration in four languages, blew my mind As a designer, overcoming the urge to design in Figma first Deciding to build solo and also posting on social media

What we learned

Bolt is so much more than I thought it was, I would usually only use the application to generate wireframes for my designs Language diversity really matters and localized content is a necessity Vibe coding is an actual thing and it's really cool

What's next for ZEM

Add more African languages Introduce gamified learning, flash cards, quizzes, from the learner's uploaded files Peer learning and a community (I intend to call it ZemTribe) Explore the possibility of building an offline low data version for Zem (like a Zem Lite version)
